Well, I'm finally back from college, and I am happy to report that I did indeed eat at Spiral Diner for a late lunch yesterday! My dad agreed we could stop there, but we both know that my sister is an incredibly picker eater -- we didn't tell her our vegan dining plans until we pulled into Spiral's parking lot. Even though she's 18, we knew my sister would throw a hissy fit if she found out we were planning to eat at a 100% vegan restaurant. Here are just a few clues about how picky she is: She hates vegetables, she hates whole grains, she hates anything healthy, and she loves plain cheese quesadillas but claims she hates vegetarian food. She "hates" reading menus and she loves fried food. Her staple foods are pizza, French fries, hash browns, cheesy nachos, trans-fat-laden Keebler cookies, and who knows what other crap. But all this is beside the point.
The point is that my dad and I enjoyed our meals at Spiral, even though the whole time my sister gave us hell that we were there. I don't get to go to all vegan restaurants very often, and this is the place I requested to go on our trip. It sucks that my sister felt like she had to ruin it for me. Here's what my dad ordered:

According to the menu, The Big Taquito is "a heaping helping of our tofu scramble with diced sausage, onions, red bell peppers, potatoes, and avocado - all wrapped up, grilled, and sealed in a tortilla, served with a side of fresh salsa." He chose the potato salad as his side. I didn't try any of his meal, but my dad kept saying it was really good.
My sister ordered the V-L-T: "bacun bits, lettuce, and tomato served on grilled multi-grain bread with mayo." She ordered corn chips for her side item. She told me she doesn't even like non-vegan bacon, so it beats me why she ordered this sandwich. She didn't like the texture of the "bacun" bits and said it reminded her of a "cat litter sandwich." I'm not joking. She just scraped them off the bread and ate a vegan mayo/lettuce/tomato sandwich. I tried some of the bits from her plate and thought they were pretty addicting. Later she admitted she liked the bread.
Since it's not too often that I can eat absolutely anything on the menu, it took me forever to decide on my entree. I'm not much of a sandwich or wrap girl -- I like plate-style, fork-and-knife entrees -- but the wrap and sandwich section makes up the bulk of Spiral's menu. Finally I chose the Crispy Spring Wrap, which was "grilled seitan, carrots, cucumbers, red bell peppers, red onion, and salad greens topped with our homemade agave mustard dressing," rolled inside a flour tortilla. I had orange wedges for my side.

The wrap was pretty good -- I haven't had seitan since January and really wanted some. I also thought the agave mustard sounded good, but the wrap definitely was smothered in the mustard sauce. I still enjoyed it, and the seitan was grilled and had a different texture than I'm used to. The seitan was my favorite part, for sure.

I would definitely like to go back to Spiral to try some other menu items, but I know that won't be possible with my sister around. (Plus, the diner is 4+ hours away from my parent's house.) I couldn't decide on dessert either, so I decided to be boring and get a Chocolate Chip Cookie. It was a crispy kind of cookie. I liked it, but I think Dreena's Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies (with spelt flour) are better!

If any of you have ever visited Panda Express in the past, you know about the phenomenon that is Orange Chicken. Well, you can't even get anything vegetarian at Panda Express (it's all cooked in chicken stock, even the rice and vegetables), but I did finally recreate orange chicken by using frozen tofu and combining two different recipes. It was absolutely, positively delicious: Orange Tofu is one of the best things I've ever made!

I thawed some frozen lite firm tofu (I use 1/3 block for one serving), cut it into moderately thick and squat triangle shapes, wrapped it in some paper towels, and pressed it on a cutting board topped with a lot of heavy objects. After 10 minutes, it was ready. I filled a bowl with 1/4 cup of cornstarch, put the tofu inside, covered it, and shook it up. The tofu was still slightly moist, so the cornstarch coated the outside really well. I browned each side of the tofu triangles in 1/2 tablespoon of peanut oil. Meanwhile, I sauteed a chopped green onion in water in a non-stick pan, and heated up Dreena's Orange Sesame Tofu sauce from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan. I used 1/4 of the recipe to make my single serving. The only part I made from Dreena's recipe was the sauce -- I put it in the pan with the green onions, heated it through, and then thickened it up with a little cornstarch.
Next, I dropped the browned, breaded tofu triangles into the orange sauce and stirred gently to completely coat them. I plopped these babies on top of some reheated leftover brown rice and steamed broccoli, and then sprinkled the tofu with sesame seeds and more green onions. Ohhh man, this meal rocked! (Using juice from freshly squeezed orange wedges makes the most amazing sauce!) Try it, seriously. This fills the void in my life created by a longing for vegan orange "chicken."
My homemade Larabar post is coming soon! In the meantime, I will be enjoying my time at home cooking in the family kitchen, making waffles and pancakes for my family, relaxing, and maybe even embarking on my first homemade seitan adventure until I have to start summer school in a couple of weeks. Yee-haw!

How fabulous that you got to go to the infamous Spiral Diner!! I've got my eye on that cookie ;0)
Hopefully your sister will come around to liking amazing food - she's missing out! :0)
As a Larabar fanatic, I simple cannot WAIT for your homemade Larabar post!!!
Oh I am so jealous of your trip to an all-vegan restaurant! I'll have to do some research to see if there are any near me...
That orange tofu looks and sounds amazing! I miss Chinese food sometimes, so maybe I'll give that a try. As always, your food is so pretty!
I'm so jealous that you got to go to Spriral!! So sorry your sis kinda ruined the experience. Does she read your blog? Doesn't she know all the fabulous food you eat? Maybe she'll grow out of it soon :-)
What part of Texas are you in this summer? If you're ever on a roadtrip to Houston, give me a shout!
Welcome back to Texas! (I'm assuming the final destination was TX....)
Yum! I cannot wait to go to a vegan restaurant, I think I may go for my birthday at the end of this lunch. It really looks like you enjoyed it!
I added you to my new blogroll, hope that's alright :)
the cookie's got a lot of eyes on it, I'm telling you! and sorry that your sis had to try so hard to go and ruin it all for you. bah, sisters...
You always seem to find the absolute best looking restaurant food ever!! Yum!! I'm very jealous. =)
Homemade larabars?? That's gonna save a lot of money!
boo for cranky sister :( Your food looks so good though!!! I can pretend to be your sister and you can take me to yummy vegan restaurants....lol and stealing my roomies grill...haha genius idea! I think she'd notice though. We're kinda both addicted. I kinda have a feeling that my next 20 posts are going to be devoted to grillable foods.
Your food at Spiral Diner looks delicious. You dad's potato salad is calling my name and your wrap sounds like the perfect lunch!
The orange tofu sounds yummy. I often crave "junky" Chinese food (even though your recipe is WAY healthier than Panda Express)
And I'm so looking forward to your Larabar post! I'm curious to see how the homemade ones stack up against the store bought bars
I am so glad you got to try Spiral Diner! That restaurant was on my list of stops when I visited my parents last month. Everything we ordered was great!
I am sorry about your sister. Unfortunately I know many people with a diet similar to hers, and their palate is only used to those tastes. Therefore, they really DON'T like other foods. The upside is that if someone wants to change that, after a few weeks of good healthy food your palate does change. I wish I could convince one of my sisters to eat better!
Your orange tofu sounds so good! I haven't tried the frozen way, is it a big difference in texture? I have to let you know if I try it.
I had no idea you even lived in Texas! But I’m excited that you got to go to the Spiral Diner and that they had seitan when you went (the last time I went, they were out of it).
It’s so funny that you and your sister are completely opposite when it comes to your food preferences. My sister and I are completely opposite in a lot of ways too; my mom always asks us how we grew up in the same house.
Too bad the cookie wasn’t stellar… next time, go with the ooey-gooey brownie—their brownies are the best ever; so fudgey and moist, with little pecan pieces.
My goodness, I am soooo excited to hear that Pei Wei added a new dish—and Thai basil is one of my favorite things ever. I always order the basil dish when I go to my favorite Thai restaurant. I keep passing Pei Wei and saying that I need to go… all my friends should be coming back into town soon from their respective colleges, so hopefully I can drag some of them to Pei Wei this week. I DID get to go to PF Chang’s this week, so I haven’t completely been doing without Chinese food ;o).
On a completely different note, your orange tofu sounds amazing—much better than Panda Express. I’ll be copying down that recipe as soon as I finish writing this!
Sorry that I’ve completely bombarded your comment section with my novel-of-a-comment!
Such things happen - stubborn people not wanting to eat healthier. But you got to eat at Spiral Diner! I'm jealous!
I totally agree that Dreena's chocolate chip cookies are hard to beat! They're just so darn good! I'm glad that you got to stop at the vegan diner, even though your sister made things difficult (boo on that!). Maybe someday she'll come around! (Making her some of Dreena's cookies might help?)
Sorry about your sister :( My brother's a picky eater as well~so I feel your pain! But at least the food was good :D And it seems like there's hope if your sister at least liked the bread? XD
The orange tofu looks great! I've never heard of tofu with cornstarch before~can't wait to try this!
Can't wait for the Larabar post!
Sisters - don't you just want to slap them silly sometimes? On a lighter note - homemade Larabar post - woohoo! I'm excited...
I'm with you-- I'm sticking with the lettuce wraps... Sometimes, a dish is so good that it just doesn't make sense to order anything else!
How wonderful that you go to eat there =) I'm dreaming of a visit ever since I read Katie's post about it.
So sorry to hear that your sister was so bitchy all the time, ugh! But hey, the fact that she admitted she liked it - even if it was hours later - shows that she might get used to it over time and get over her view that what's not greasy and cheesy and loaded with trans-fats is disgusting health food.
So excited for the Larabar post =D
Enjoy your time off and have a nice day!!
The world needs more vegan restaurants and that looks like a good one.
That's so cool that your dad indulged with you at The Spiral Diner. Parents who are accepting of (and even willing to try) vegan foods are the best! I think it's fascinating how different sisters can be. I have two, and we are definitely opposites in many ways (makes for more interesting family dynamics!).
The hemp nut butters...I was never a big fan of anything with hemp in it, but these were actually pretty tasty! We tried a chocolate one, and I believe a plain one. This goes without saying, but the chocolate one was much yummier!
I really ought to post more pictures of Tim, he's always up to no good (sneaking cookies is the perfect example)! Hahahaa!
Wow, Spiral Diner is sure getting some great press! If it were on the same continent as I...
I'll have to try your orange chicken- I have my favorite recipe that Dabbles With Apples posted a while back, but will try these variations!
That's awesome that you got to go to an all-vegan restaurant, especially Spiral Diner. I would have a terrible time picking out too. The food looks really good, including your orange tofu. Yum!
Hahaha yeah, I guess you can still be vegan if you bite your sister… as long as you only do it when she deserves it ;o). I won't judge you!
Your sister sounds exactly like my 20 year old brother! He lives off of meat, pizza, white bread, chips and pastries. I really want to go to Spiral Diner, but it's too far away and there's never any reason to go to that area. Yum, orange tofu!
Ahh I'd love to visit a vegan restaurant, especially one with wonderful dishes like that! I'm glad your meal there was nice, it's a pity not everyone in your family enjoyed it as much as you did. Maybe your sister will come to appreciate vegan food more in the future? anyway, I'm surprised anyone can claim they don't like vegan food when they're around the yummy dishes you make all the time. that orange tofu recipe of yours makes me hungry... and I think I need to buy ED&BV sometime soon!
